Change of career in electrical Empty Change of career in electrical

Post by Sparkinthedark Tue Jul 12, 2016 8:59 am

    Hi,

so i decided to change career from working for the banks to trying out trades.

So far, i have been working for someone doing air conditioning & refrigeration for six months.

The person wants to sign me up as an adult apprentice, however, i want to give electrical a go

Question, is worth it to do a 3 months prevoc cert 2 electechnology course ($3600) and then find someone to take me on?

or use that $3600 to get tools, PPE, Uniforms and do some work experience and hopefully someone will give me a go?

    would really like some advice

    thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum Mr. Sparkinthedark.

I'm not up on this 2 electechnology course you speak of , so i really can't say how well it would 'sell' you.

Is there a particular niche of the electrical trade you're aiming for?

Being i'm in the 'back 9' of my career , i find it difficult to express to the noobs what to expect.

There's been so many changes ,  methodology , bureaucracy , economic

I'd like to say we're leaving it better than we found it, alas i can not

How are the new code requirements helping with all that?

They really aren't Mr Par Crying or Very sad

    I've a collection of nec codebooks , some back 60 years .

The older ones were 5X7 pocket books , and read easy.
The story the old timers passed down was a trade was where someone ended up when they didn't wish to pursue higher ed, so they went to work with this literally in their work pant pocket ,tool or lunchbox.... Smile

These days it's morphed into quasi-legal hoops ,where one would need serious reading skills to parse out. A lot of the Trig based calcs are a feat for anyone who had not made good on it in HS. There are many peripheral documents and referrals necessary too, so any good Spark must maintain a library. Neutral

The NEC's states in it's intro that it's not a design manual , yet leaves participants in exactly that situation , as well as having to deal with manufacturer driven interventions that ,at times, throw theory under the bus Shocked

I'm probably sounding sour grapes Rolling Eyes , but having lived some of this evolution , i'd like to say to those up and coming that it's no easy road

Sweet grapes. The old code books, those were the good old days lol. Common sense requirements and only those which were essential to life and property. No gimmicks, design requirements or impossible to interpret language. I would have no qualm if NFPA went back to the 93 NEC or even 83 NEC.
